How far can my dog walk?
The honest answer is a ceiling rather than a target, and it depends on age, airway and build far more than on enthusiasm. Here is where each limit comes from.
The rule that overrides everything else: puppies
Five minutes of structured exercise per month of age, per outing. It is the tightest limit on this page and it wins whenever it applies, because growth plates stay open until roughly twelve months — and 18 to 24 months in large and giant breeds.
Puppy walking limits by age
Structured walking only. Pottering around the garden at the puppy’s own pace, where it can stop whenever it likes, does not count against these figures.
| Age | Per outing | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| 2 months | 10 min | Up to 3 times a day |
| 3 months | 15 min | Up to 3 times a day |
| 4 months | 20 min | Up to 3 times a day |
| 6 months | 30 min | Up to 3 times a day |
| 9 months | 45 min | Up to 2 times a day |
| 12 months | 60 min | Large breeds: hold here until your vet confirms growth plates have closed |
Safe ceilings for adults
These are upper limits for a conditioned dog, not goals to aim at. A dog that is not currently active should start at roughly half and add about 10% a week.
| Dog | Ceiling per outing | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Flat-faced (Pug, French Bulldog, Boxer) | 20 min | Shortened airway; cannot cool by panting |
| Senior, any breed | 40 min | Split into two shorter outings rather than one long one |
| Toy breeds | 35 min | Far more steps to cover the same ground |
| Low-energy builds (Basset, Bulldog) | 45 min | Heavy frame, low stamina |
| Healthy adult, average build | 90 min | The ceiling, not the target |
Where two limits apply, the tighter one wins. A senior French Bulldog is held at the flat-faced ceiling of 20 minutes, not the senior 40.
Distance is not the same as effort
Two dogs of the same weight can differ more than twofold in what a kilometre costs them — about 0.6 kcal per kg per km for a long-limbed dog against 1.3 for a short-legged one. A two-kilometre walk is genuinely harder work for a corgi than for a whippet of identical weight, and the corgi is doing far more steps to get there.
That is why a plan built on time alone misleads. See the calorie cost by size and build.

The planner applies every ceiling above automatically, tells you which one it hit and why, and gives you a distance rather than a range. Build a plan, or read the joints and growth-plate guide.
